What Attention Selects

Attention as selection from exteroceptive and interoceptive signals, with computational attention kept as a bounded analogy.

A message arrives

The screen lights up. A sender's name appears. Words are read. Those are outer signals: light, language, timing, source, and social context.

At the same moment, breath may shorten, the chest may tighten, energy may rise, or attention may narrow. Those are inner signals available through bodily sensation and felt state.

Exteroception brings information from outside the body. Interoception brings information about internal bodily state. Observer Attention begins where a person selects something meaningful from this combined field.

It does not claim that a person directly reads dopamine, cortisol, serotonin, or any other neurochemical as a dashboard number. The observer notices available experience: sensation, mood, energy, urge, emotion, and thought. Measurement of biological signals would require separate instruments, methods, and claims.

Selection comes before interpretation

Consider two sentences:

The trophy did not fit in the suitcase because it was too small.
The trophy did not fit in the suitcase because it was too large.

In the first, attention resolves “it” toward the suitcase. In the second, toward the trophy. The words barely change, but the selected relationship changes the meaning.

This is the limited bridge to computational attention. In a Transformer, attention is mathematical weighting among token representations used to compute an output. It is not consciousness, interoception, intention, or human understanding.

In this paper, attention means the human selection of meaningful signals from lived reality. The analogy stops at selection before meaning.

Attention is not yet a record

A selected signal can disappear, be revised, or remain private. It becomes protocol-legible only when the observer chooses to give it a boundary and represent it. That next action belongs to ~ValueCaptureProtocol.

Attention selects. Time gives boundary. Evidence gives the claim something to stand on.

Evidence and limitation

The paper uses computational attention as an educational analogy, not a biological or technical equivalence. It does not claim that human attention can be reduced to token weighting or that subjective reports establish physiological fact.
